SHILONG : Meghalaya has restarted coal mining under a scientific and regulated framework, ending a decade-long ban imposed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in 2014 over environmental and safety violations.
Two coal blocks — Saryngkham A in East Jaintia Hills and Pyndengshahlang in West Khasi Hills — have begun production after receiving statutory clearances from the Ministry of Coal earlier this year.
The move aims to ensure legal, safe, and environmentally sound mining while boosting the region’s contribution to India’s energy needs.
