Silchar: The Silchar Cultural Unit staged its latest theatrical production, Budhni, on Sunday evening (7 pm) at Banga Bhawan. Written and directed by noted theatre personality Shekhar Debroy, the play was presented under the “This Month’s Play” initiative of the Barak Upatyaka Banga Sahitya O Sanskriti Sammelan, Cachar district committee. The performance commenced at around 7 p.m.

Budhni is inspired by a real-life incident and portrays the heartrending story of a tribal woman whose life was upended in 1959. During the inauguration of a dam in Jharkhand, Budhni greeted the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru with a garland.
What seemed like a simple gesture brought devastating consequences—she was socially ostracised by her community, and her personal life fell apart. The evening began with an introductory address by Sabyasachi Purkayastha of Barak Banga.
