Silchar: Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday unveiled the newly installed statue of Mangal Pandey at Bypass Point near NIT Silchar, calling it a proud and historic moment for the Barak Valley.

Mangal Pandey, remembered as the torchbearer of the First War of Independence in 1857, is revered for his courage and sacrifice that ignited the fight against British rule. His defiance became a rallying cry for freedom, inspiring generations in India’s struggle for independence.
The Chief Minister said the new installation is not just a statue but a tribute to the heroes who laid down their lives for the motherland.
He added that it serves as a reminder of the nation’s heritage and the patriotic spirit that continues to bind the country together.
Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty, MP Parimal Suklabaidya, Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha, Cachar BJP president Rupam Saha, ministers Kaushik Rai and Krishnendu Paul, and others were present.
