Silchar: Silchar paid heartfelt tribute to legendary folk artist Late Kalika Prasad Bhattacharjee on his birth anniversary, observed as Loko Sanghati Divas. The programme was organised by the Cachar District Administration in collaboration with the Regional Office of Information & Public Relations, Barak Valley Zone, and the Directorate of Cultural Affairs at the DDIPR office premises.

The day began with Kalika Prasad’s immortal songs played across the campus, filling the air with the rich cadence of his folk compositions. Born in Silchar on September 11, 1970, Kalika Prasad’s immense contribution to folk music and cultural heritage led the Government of Assam to officially declare his birth anniversary as Loko Sanghati Divas.

Floral tributes were offered at his portrait by officials, family members, and artistes. Assistant Commissioner and Branch Officer of Cultural Affairs, Deepa Das, ACS, In-charge of DDIPR Barak Valley Zone, reflected on his legacy, saying that Kalika Prasad was more than a singer—he was a cultural torchbearer who gave Bengali folk songs a new identity and built bridges between Assam, Bengal, and the world through his music.

Family members also joined the commemoration. His brother-in-law, Samar Bijoy Chakraborty, retired teacher of Adarchand High School, recalled Kalika Prasad’s journey from Silchar to Kolkata, where he rose to prominence with his troupe Dohar. “He dedicated his life to preserving folk traditions and carrying them from village courtyards to global stages. His efforts gave new recognition to our cultural roots,” he said.

The programme featured soulful renditions of his songs by local artistes of Barak Valley, traditional dance performances, and a moving dance tribute by his uncle, Shoumitra Shankar Choudhury, which drew warm applause.

As melodies of Kalika Prasad’s songs lingered in the air, Loko Sanghati Divas in Silchar became not only a commemoration but also a celebration of an enduring legacy that continues to inspire, unite, and keep folk traditions alive for generations.
