Silchar: The National Lok Adalat organised by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Cachar, on September 13 gave hundreds of litigants long-awaited relief, with disputes worth more than Rs.7.42 crore resolved in a single day. The forum allowed people to settle cases quickly, sparing them the delays and expenses of regular court proceedings.
Cases ranged from motor accident claims and matrimonial disputes to civil and criminal matters. Pre-litigation issues such as bank recoveries, and electricity and telephone bill disputes were also taken up. Of 1,153 pending cases listed, 282 were settled with a total value of Rs5.35 crore. Another 555 pre-litigation cases were disposed of out of 8,218, adding up to Rs2.07 crore in settlements.
For many, the Lok Adalat meant closure not just on paper but in life, lifting the weight of drawn-out legal battles. Guided by conciliation, the process enabled both sides to reach practical, mutually acceptable solutions in a friendlier setting.
DLSA Chairman Biprajit Roy and Secretary Subhadra Acharyya thanked all stakeholders—banks, insurance firms, utility service providers, and the public of Cachar—for their cooperation. They noted that the exercise not only reduces backlog in courts but also builds confidence in alternative dispute resolution.
The outcome in Cachar highlighted once again how Lok Adalats serve as a vital bridge between formal legal systems and accessible justice, delivering timely relief while easing pressure on the judiciary.
