Borkhola: The Bengali Department of Government Model College, Borkhola, unveiled the third edition of its wall magazine on Tuesday to mark the birth centenary of poet Sukanta Bhattacharjee and the 100th year of Rabindranath Tagore’s Raktakarabi.
The programme’s highlight was a keynote address on The Beacon of Literature by Prof. Bela Das, senior faculty member of the Bengali Department, Assam University.
Unveiling the wall magazine, Prof. Das told students that such platforms encourage young writers to express themselves. She urged them to view education not only as a means of livelihood but as a journey toward self-awareness and the making of noble human beings. Literature, she said, sharpens thought, expands consciousness, and serves as a guiding light in life.
The event opened with the lighting of the lamp and an inaugural song by student Moumita Deb, followed by a dance performance from Piyali Goswami. Students also presented a portrait of Prof. Das, sketched by alumnus Shubham Pal.
Drawing inspiration from Tagore and Sukanta, Prof. Das called on the younger generation to persevere with their studies despite hardships, stay away from addiction, and contribute meaningfully to society and the nation.
She later interacted with faculty members from different departments and donated two of her books to the Bengali Department library. As part of the “Asom Boi Borsho 2025” initiative, certificates were presented to Dr. Jaydeep Goswami for being the highest user of the central library, along with recognitions for book donors and winners of National Sports Day competitions.
The programme was conducted by Dr. Madhumita Ghosh, head of the Bengali Department, along with Dr. Mousona Nath. Dr. Ghosh delivered the vote of thanks.
