Silchar: The Assam government has extended its One Time Settlement (OTS) scheme under the Vehicle Scrappage Policy, 2022, until March 31, 2026. The move aims to reduce the number of old and unsafe vehicles on the roads while easing the financial burden on vehicle owners. The scheme was earlier set to end on March 31, 2025.

Under the OTS, owners who voluntarily surrender their vehicles at a Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF) can have 75% of their outstanding dues—including motor vehicle tax, fitness fines, and other liabilities—waived. Officials say this not only helps citizens clear accumulated dues but also encourages the removal of polluting and unsafe vehicles from Assam’s roads.

The decision aligns with directives from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, which has encouraged states to provide incentives for faster implementation of the national scrappage policy. Vehicle owners can initiate the scrapping process online at vscrap.parivahan.gov.in. After dismantling, the RVSF issues a Certificate of Deposit (COD) and a Certificate of Vehicle Scrapping (CVS), which owners must submit to the registering authority to cancel their Registration Certificate (RC).

District Transport Officers across Assam, including in Cachar, have urged citizens to take advantage of this one-time opportunity. Officials note that the scheme will help free roads of outdated vehicles, improve road safety, and contribute to a cleaner environment.

By extending the OTS until 2026, the government aims to make the transition smoother for vehicle owners while advancing its goal of building a modern, eco-friendly transport ecosystem across Assam.
