Silchar: Cachar District is preparing for a spectacular musical tribute to Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, as the District Administration readies to host a massive cultural celebration on November 5 at the Police Parade Ground, Silchar.
The highlight of the programme will be a 5,000-voice chorus performing Dr. Hazarika’s immortal song “Manush Manusher Jonno”, a timeless call for love, humanity, and unity. The event aims to bring together people from all walks of life in a heartfelt homage to the legendary artist on his death anniversary.

Preparations for the event were finalized at a meeting chaired by District Commissioner Mridul Yadav, IAS, with the participation of senior officials, education heads, and cultural representatives. Additional District Commissioner (Cultural Affairs) Smt. Phyllis Hrangchal, ACS, welcomed attendees and outlined the objectives, stressing the importance of celebrating Dr. Hazarika’s enduring cultural and social legacy.
According to the official plan, the commemoration will begin at 3 PM with a floral tribute by the District Commissioner, dignitaries, and cultural personalities, followed by the grand chorus and a 17-minute medley, first performed during the centenary celebrations in Guwahati.

A parallel event will also be held in Lakhipur Co-District, featuring 500 singers joining in the same chorus, symbolizing unity across the region. A final rehearsal is scheduled for November 4 at the Police Parade Ground to ensure coordination among all participants.
In an inclusive step, the District Administration will issue digital participation certificates, signed by the District Commissioner, to all student performers through an online portal.
Commissioner Mridul Yadav emphasized community involvement, inviting social workers, NGOs, clubs, tea garden workers, educational institutions, NCC, NSS, ASLRM groups, PSUs, and government departments to take part. “This programme is not just a tribute but a reaffirmation of the values Dr. Hazarika stood for — humanity, unity, and cultural pride,” Yadav said.
Departments have been assigned specific duties to ensure smooth execution. The Inspector of Schools will coordinate student participation and attire — white shirts for boys and traditional dresses for girls — while universities and colleges will oversee their respective contingents.

The Police Department will manage security and traffic, the Health Department will provide medical support, and the Food and Civil Supplies Department will distribute refreshment packets. Media and publicity will be handled by the Information and Public Relations Department, Barak Valley Region.
The event will also feature performances by local artists and a human chain formation during the collective singing of “Manush Manusher Jonno.” Participants have been encouraged to wear white, symbolizing peace and harmony — values central to Dr. Hazarika’s music.
The programme will be graced by Kaushik Rai, Minister for Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs, Mines and Minerals, and Barak Valley Development Department, along with several dignitaries.
The preparatory meeting was also attended by Roktim Baruah, ACS (Co-District Commissioner, Dholai), Dhrubajyoti Pathak, ACS (Co-District Commissioner, Lakhipur), Assistant Commissioners Bonnykha Chetia, Deepa Das, and Anjali Kumari, among others.
With thousands expected to join their voices in unison, Silchar is set to resonate with the timeless spirit of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika — a celebration of humanity through the universal language of music.
