Locals Slam MLA Misbahul Islam as “Failed Legislator”

Borkhola: The people of South Buribail under the Borkhola Assembly constituency in Cachar district are reeling under the devastating impact of the Barak River’s aggressive erosion. Large portions of the only road connecting over 300 families have already been washed away, cutting off vital access routes and plunging the area into severe hardship.

Residents, including school and college students, continue to travel through perilous paths at great personal risk. Yet, the locals allege that their elected representative, MLA Misbahul Islam Laskar, has remained completely indifferent to their plight.

With the 2026 Assembly elections drawing closer, MLA Misbahul Islam has reportedly begun preparations to contest again from Borkhola as a Congress candidate. However, in erosion-hit Buribail, frustration is running deep. The affected residents have openly branded him a “failed legislator,” accusing him of abandoning the promises he made before the last election.

Villagers recall that Laskar had assured them of permanent measures to curb river erosion if elected. But years later, the crisis has only worsened, and even accessing basic government relief has become nearly impossible.

An elderly resident, voicing the collective despair of the community, said, “We kept electing Misbahul Islam, trusting his sympathy for the minority community. But instead of relief, all we’ve received are problems and destruction. There’s no hope left that he’ll solve the erosion problem. We’re simply waiting for the river to claim what’s left of our homes — or our graves by its banks.”

The residents have urged immediate intervention from the district administration and the state government to address the worsening erosion that threatens to wipe out the entire Buribail area.
