Silchar: The Cachar district administration has assured the Asom Gana Parishad that families settled on government land in Rongpur will receive compensation and rehabilitation for the land they are set to lose under the Bharatmala road project.

A delegation from the AGP Cachar district committee met District Commissioner Mridul Kumar Yadav on Tuesday to raise the long-standing demand for compensation to residents of Rongpur Part I and Part II. These areas fall under the first phase of the Silchar–Vairengte stretch of the Bharatmala corridor, where road construction has affected homestead plots of families living there for decades.

The delegation thanked the district administration, the Assam government, and the Centre for pushing forward with the project. They urged that displaced families be allotted government land and given proper rehabilitation.

DC Yadav assured them that the government is examining both land allotment and rehabilitation carefully and that the affected families will be included in the process.

Later in the day, the AGP team met ADC (Health and Land Acquisition) Khalida Sultana Barbhuiya, who is preparing to leave the district. They offered her a farewell felicitation and expressed gratitude for her role in handling the Rongpur compensation process.

The delegation also visited District Agriculture Officer Dr A. R. Ahmed and discussed ongoing initiatives and future plans aimed at strengthening agricultural development in Cachar.

Those who took part in the visit included district committee executive member Maniton Singha, general secretaries Sujit Sharma and Mominul Haque Laskar, Silchar Legislative Committee president Soumyadip Bhattacharjee (Dipon), vice president Pradip Sinha, Silchar Farmers’ Council president Kutub Uddin Barbhuiya, Minority Council district president Haidar Hussain Laskar, Farmers’ Council district president Ahmed Sayed Barbhuiya, Youth Council central secretary Nacbub Hussain Laskar, and joint secretaries Deep Bhattacharjee and Altab Barbhuiya.
