Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Monday inaugurated the fortnight-long Oil and Gas Conservation Awareness Campaign, Saksham 2025–26, organised by Indian Oil Corporation Limited. The programme was launched at the Mizofed Petrol Pump, MINECO, Aizawl, in the presence of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister B. Lalchhanzova.

The campaign is being observed under the theme “Conserve Oil, Go Green.”

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said India is still heavily dependent on imports for oil and gas, with nearly 80 percent of the total requirement coming from abroad. He noted that India is also the third-largest consumer of oil and gas in the world.

Lalduhoma warned that excessive use of oil and gas causes air pollution and releases harmful gases like carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide, which affect human health. He said it also damages forests, bamboo, soil and the overall environment. Stressing the need for conservation, he said saving oil and gas not only reduces costs but also protects natural resources.

He pointed out that oil and gas are non-renewable resources and future generations will depend on them. Conserving them today, he said, is an investment for children and the future. As these are daily necessities, he urged people to use them carefully and efficiently.

Highlighting steps taken by the state government, the Chief Minister said work is underway to provide domestic gas pipeline connections in Aizawl, with construction progressing from Tripura. He also said the government is pushing for more oil and gas exploration in Mizoram and is focusing on tapping the state’s green energy potential.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister B. Lalchhanzova said efforts are being made to ensure uninterrupted gas supply. He said the Mualkhang Gas Bottling Plant is being upgraded and construction work is ongoing. To avoid problems caused by oil supply disruptions in the past, the government is also planning to set up an oil depot.

He added that distributors play an important role in public service and urged them to work sincerely so that people do not face inconvenience.

The programme was chaired by Z. Lhungdhim, DGM (LPG-E) and State Level Coordinator. Lalhruaitluanga, Managing Director of MIZOFED, delivered the vote of thanks. During the Saksham campaign, various awareness activities on oil and gas conservation will be held across the state.

As per Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell data, Mizoram consumed 119.20 thousand metric tonnes of diesel, 58.83 thousand metric tonnes of petrol and 34.6 thousand metric tonnes of LPG in 2024–25. The state currently has 60 LPG distributors, 115 petrol pumps and over 4.22 lakh registered vehicles.
