Tura: Mukul Sangma has filed a police complaint against former legislator S. G. Esmatur Mominin, alleging that a recent speech delivered by Mominin could incite violence and communal tension ahead of the elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council.
According to the complaint submitted to the Officer-in-Charge of Phulbari Police Station on March 10, a video circulating on social media shows Mominin addressing a gathering on the evening of March 9. The address reportedly followed an alleged physical assault earlier that day at the office of the Deputy Commissioner in Tura, where Mominin had gone to file his nomination for the upcoming district council polls.
In his complaint, Sangma alleged that the speech contained “vitriolic election rhetoric” at a time when tensions are already high over the participation of non-tribal candidates in the GHADC elections. He warned that such remarks could provoke hostility and deepen divisions among communities in the politically sensitive Garo Hills region.
The former chief minister also claimed that Mominin invoked his name and that of two other public figures during the address, suggesting they had supported his nomination and the participation of non-tribal candidates in the elections. Sangma denied the allegation, stating that no such discussion or endorsement had taken place and describing the claim as “entirely untrue” and capable of spreading rumours that may fuel communal discord.
While the exact size of the gathering seen in the video could not be confirmed, Sangma noted that the audible responses in the footage suggested that more than ten people were present during the address.
Seeking legal action, Sangma urged the police to register a case under Sections 192, 196, 353 and 57 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, or any other relevant provisions, for allegedly spreading rumours and promoting enmity in a socially sensitive environment.
Police officials have not yet issued a public statement on the complaint.
