Shillong: Senior Meghalaya leader Pynshngain N. Syiem is likely to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in May following his exit from the Congress, according to Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Vincent H. Pala.

Speaking to reporters in Shillong, Pala said Syiem had grown unhappy after being asked by the party to step down from the Executive Committee (EC) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC). Syiem had been aligned with the National People’s Party (NPP) in the council.

Pala stated that the directive from the party leadership led to dissatisfaction, which eventually resulted in Syiem’s resignation from the Congress.

He also indicated that Syiem’s possible move to the BJP may not be an isolated case. Pala hinted that leaders from other parties, including the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the NPP, could also switch sides in the coming months.

Syiem, who recently quit the Congress, had earlier criticised the party’s central leadership, alleging that concerns raised by state leaders were not addressed.

The development comes amid ongoing political shifts in Meghalaya, with parties gearing up for future electoral contests.
