Shillong: Authorities in Shillong have issued a weather advisory warning of thunderstorms, lightning and intense rainfall across the East Khasi Hills district from April 27 to May 1.
The alert comes after a forecast by the India Meteorological Department, which has predicted strong winds and a high risk of disruption during the five-day period.

Storm conditions began on April 27 with very heavy rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph. Similar weather is expected to continue from April 28 to 30, with thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rain accompanied by winds of 40 to 50 kmph. On May 1, the district is likely to witness continued thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, with wind gusts of up to 50 kmph.
Officials have advised residents to remain cautious and take necessary safety measures. There is a risk of flash floods, especially in low-lying areas and near rivers and streams. People have been asked to secure loose items such as tin sheets, bricks and signboards that could be blown away by strong winds.
Residents have also been urged to switch off electrical appliances during lightning activity to avoid damage and reduce the risk of injury.
