Disrupting Traffic and Daily Life

GUWAHATI : Heavy rainfall that lashed several parts of Assam on the night of May 14 triggered severe waterlogging in multiple areas of Guwahati and Sribhumi, disrupting normal life and causing major traffic congestion.

In Sribhumi, continuous rainfall submerged several low-lying localities, with roads and residential areas inundated under rainwater. Waterlogging was reported from different parts of the town, affecting vehicular movement and hampering routine public activities.

Meanwhile, Guwahati witnessed widespread artificial flooding after a single night of intense rainfall, once again exposing the city’s recurring urban flood problem during the monsoon season.

Several roads and residential localities experienced heavy water accumulation, leading to long traffic snarls and severe disruption in daily commute for office-goers, students and other commuters.

Vehicles were seen moving slowly through flooded stretches, while pedestrians struggled to navigate submerged roads and waterlogged footpaths in several parts of the city.

Residents blamed inadequate drainage infrastructure and clogged drains for worsening the situation, alleging that poor maintenance of drainage networks continued to aggravate flooding after every spell of heavy rain.

The downpour also affected movement across key commercial and residential zones, with many commuters reportedly stranded in traffic for extended periods due to inundated roads and slow-moving vehicles.

Locals expressed concern over the recurring nature of artificial flooding in Guwahati and urged authorities to adopt long-term measures to improve drainage systems, enhance water discharge capacity and mitigate urban flooding during the monsoon season.
