Mizoram: Members of Mizo Zirlai Pawl on Sunday staged a protest outside the office of the state tourism director in Aizawl, opposing the Mizoram government’s decision to re-employ a retired official in a key position.
The protest was triggered by the government’s move to re-engage retired officer Lalrodingi as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Commerce and Industries, and Geology and Mining departments. Later, she was also appointed as OSD to the Chief Minister with effect from May 1 through an order issued on April 24.
The influential student body criticised the decision and demanded that the government withdraw the appointment, alleging that the re-employment of retired officials deprived eligible serving officers and youths of opportunities.
Amid mounting opposition, the state government later cancelled the earlier order. According to revised directions, Lalrodingi will continue only as OSD attached to the Chief Minister’s office.
The protest by the MZP drew attention from passersby and officials, while student leaders reiterated their demand for transparency and fairness in government appointments.
