The highly trained commandos are expected to carry out targeted operations against armed groups and other elements involved in violence and unrest across the state

Imphal: In a major step towards enhancing security and ensuring lasting peace in Manipur, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved the deployment of two battalions of the elite Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (COBRA) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in the violence-affected state.
According to official sources, the two battalions, 207 COBRA, currently based in West Bengal, and 210 COBRA, stationed in Assam, will be deployed in Manipur in a phased manner over the coming weeks.
The highly trained commandos are expected to carry out targeted operations against armed groups and other elements involved in violence and unrest across the state. The deployment is aimed at strengthening the security grid, improving area domination, and supporting ongoing efforts to restore normalcy in the region.

Sources said the decision comes amid continued efforts by the Centre to stabilise the security situation in Manipur, which has witnessed prolonged ethnic tensions and sporadic incidents of violence over the past several months.
COBRA units are among the CRPF’s most specialised forces, trained in guerrilla warfare, jungle operations, intelligence-based missions, and counter-insurgency operations. Their induction is expected to enhance the operational capabilities of security forces already deployed in the state.
Officials expressed hope that the additional deployment would help curb militant activities, improve law and order, and create a more secure environment for residents as peace-building measures continue across Manipur.
Further details regarding the areas of deployment and operational plans are expected to be announced by security agencies in due course.
