Shillong: The Meghalaya Government has notified the “Display of Name Boards on Motor Vehicles Regulations, 2026,” introducing clear guidelines on the use and display of official designation plates on vehicles used by constitutional authorities, elected representatives, senior government officials, and other specified constitutional functionaries.
According to a notification issued by the State Transport Department, only individuals specifically authorized under the regulations will be permitted to display official designation name boards on their vehicles. The rules prescribe detailed specifications regarding the size, design, placement, and manner in which such boards must be displayed.

The move is aimed at ensuring uniformity, preventing misuse of official designations, and promoting transparency in the identification of government and official vehicles across the state.
The regulations also clarify that the display of an official designation name board does not automatically entitle a person or vehicle to use sirens, beacon lights, red lights, tinted glass, or any other special privileges. The use of such facilities will continue to be governed by existing laws, notifications, and regulations in force.
Officials said the new framework seeks to streamline the use of designation plates while maintaining compliance with motor vehicle laws and administrative protocols.
The notification is expected to bring greater clarity regarding the categories of individuals authorized to display official name boards and help curb unauthorized use of government designations on private or public vehicles.
