Guwahati: A Guwahati-based businessman was detained by police after videos of an elaborate birthday celebration held on the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu went viral on social media, triggering widespread criticism and concerns over the misuse of public infrastructure.
The individual has been identified as Gautam Baruah, who allegedly organized the event on the flyover to celebrate his wife’s birthday. According to reports, the celebration featured decorative arrangements, including a red carpet laid across a section of the bridge, effectively transforming part of the public roadway into a temporary party venue.
The incident reportedly disrupted traffic movement and caused inconvenience to commuters using the bridge. Videos circulating online showed decorations and activities taking place on the flyover, prompting strong reactions from the public and raising questions about safety and the unauthorized use of a vital transportation route.
Following the circulation of the videos, police intervened and detained Baruah for questioning. Authorities have launched an inquiry into the incident and are examining whether any laws or traffic regulations were violated.
The episode has sparked a broader debate on public accountability and the need for strict enforcement of rules governing the use of public spaces and infrastructure. Officials are expected to take appropriate action based on the findings of the investigation.
