Imphal: A 53-year-old Kuki farmer was shot dead by unidentified armed men while working in a jhum field in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Saturday, according to local sources. His wife, who was with him at the time of the attack, escaped unharmed.
The deceased has been identified as Haolal Singsit, a resident of Govajang village. His wife, Nemneikim Singsit, was assisting him in the field when the incident took place.
Local residents said the couple was engaged in jhum cultivation when unidentified gunmen allegedly opened fire on them. Villagers reported hearing around 20 rounds of gunfire at about 4 pm, sparking panic in the surrounding area.
Haolal Singsit sustained fatal gunshot injuries and died at the scene, while his wife managed to escape without being injured.
Security forces have been informed, and an investigation has been launched to identify those responsible for the attack. The incident has further heightened tension in the district, where the security situation remains fragile.
