New Delhi: Activist Sonam Wangchuk on Friday ended his 26-day hunger strike after receiving assurances from the Central Government regarding the concerns raised during his protest.

Wangchuk broke his fast at the hospital in the presence of Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and Union Minister Jitendra Singh. His wife, Gitanjali Angmo, was also present during the occasion.

Before ending the hunger strike, Wangchuk made an open appeal seeking a guarantee that no punitive, retaliatory, or legal action, including FIRs or police harassment, would be taken against student protesters who had participated in the Chalo Sansad march.

Responding to his appeal, Union Ministers Nadda and Jitendra Singh assured him that the government would engage constructively on the issues raised. They also conveyed that steps would be taken to address concerns related to student accountability and to ensure that peaceful student protesters would not face vindictive legal action.

Wangchuk had been on a hunger strike since late June 2026, protesting systemic issues and alleged examination paper leaks. During the fast, he reportedly lost around 11 kilograms and was admitted to a hospital after suffering from dehydration and significant muscle mass loss.

The decision to end the fast also came after more than 65 Members of Parliament appealed to Wangchuk to prioritize his health while continuing the dialogue on the issues he had raised.
