Imphal | Indian weightlifting icon Mirabai Chanu produced another historic performance by winning her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women’s 48kg category on Sunday. The Manipur star also rewrote the record books by setting multiple Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games records.
The 31-year-old lifted a total of 190kg, comprising 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk, to finish well ahead of the competition. Her total was 22kg more than silver medallist Ruth Asuquo Nyong of Nigeria, who managed a total lift of 168kg.

Mirabai broke the Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games records in the snatch, while also setting new Commonwealth Games records in the clean and jerk and total lift.
Despite a shaky start, the Olympic medallist displayed remarkable composure. She failed to register her opening snatch attempt at 82kg but bounced back strongly to complete the lift and then improve further, proving why she remains India’s most successful weightlifter.
She also faced an early setback in the clean and jerk after missing her opening attempt at 105kg. However, Mirabai confidently lifted the same weight in her second attempt, securing the gold medal and breaking the Commonwealth Games record in the process.
With the title already assured and the Asian Games less than two months away, Mirabai chose to skip her final attempt, avoiding unnecessary risk.
The victory marked a historic hat-trick of Commonwealth Games gold medals for Mirabai Chanu, further cementing her legacy as one of India’s greatest sporting champions.
