Guwahati: The official Facebook page of the Assam Premier League (APL) was hacked just days before the tournament’s scheduled kickoff, raising concerns over the digital security of one of the state’s premier domestic cricket competitions.
The breach came to light on Monday after an unauthorised and defamatory post targeting Assam cricketer and Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag appeared on the league’s official Facebook page. The post quickly drew attention on social media before it was removed.
In an official statement, APL organisers confirmed that the page had been compromised but said they had intervened and regained access to the account. The organisers also apologised to followers, fans and stakeholders for the incident and any inconvenience caused.
However, concerns over the security of the account persisted. At the time of reporting, the page’s name had reportedly been changed to “Assam Premier League Sarcasm,” while multiple troll posts had appeared, indicating that unauthorised users may still have had access to the account.
The incident has sparked questions about the page’s security as the tournament approaches, with officials working to restore normal operations and prevent further misuse of the platform.
Authorities have not yet identified those behind the cyber breach, nor have they confirmed whether a formal complaint has been lodged with cybercrime authorities.
Sources familiar with the matter said efforts are underway to fully secure the Facebook account, remove unauthorised content and restore the page ahead of the tournament, which is expected to get underway in the coming days.
