New Delhi: The Central Government has informed the Supreme Court that it is considering a major overhaul of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Undergraduate (NEET-UG), including the possibility of introducing a two-stage, computer-based examination as part of broader reforms to India’s medical entrance system.

In an affidavit filed before the apex court, the Centre said it is exploring the option of conducting NEET-UG in two computer-based stages, similar to the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), which is used for admission to engineering institutions.

However, the government clarified that no final decision has been taken on the proposed changes. It stated that any revision to the examination pattern would be implemented only after extensive consultations with stakeholders and based on the recommendations of experts.

The Centre’s submission comes amid ongoing discussions on improving the transparency, efficiency and reliability of the medical entrance examination system following concerns raised over the conduct of NEET in recent years. If approved, the proposed reforms could bring significant changes to the way aspiring medical students across the country appear for the highly competitive entrance examination.
