Imphal | Manipur gymnast Ariha Pangambam has created history by becoming the first Indian to win the senior women’s individual gold medal at the Asian Aerobic Gymnastics Championships.

Ariha clinched the historic gold at the 2026 edition of the championships, held at the UCI-certified Tagaytay City Velodrome in the Philippines from August 4 to 7. The Manipuri gymnast delivered a remarkable performance in the final, scoring 19.100 points to secure the top position. Her routine was praised for its artistry, precise execution and high degree of difficulty.

The victory marks India’s maiden gold medal in the senior women’s individual event at the Asian Aerobic Gymnastics Championships and represents a significant milestone for Indian gymnastics. The championship, organised by the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines under the aegis of the Asian Gymnastics Union, brought together more than 400 athletes and officials representing 11 countries.

Participants included gymnasts from India, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Mongolia, Cambodia, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong and the Philippines.

Manipur celebrates historic achievement

Ariha’s achievement was widely celebrated in Manipur, with Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh congratulating the gymnast for bringing pride to the state and the country. The Chief Minister described the gold medal as a reflection of the talent, determination and hard work of Manipuri athletes.

He expressed hope that Ariha’s success would inspire more young sportspersons from Manipur and across India to pursue excellence at the international level. Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla also congratulated Ariha and described her victory as a historic milestone for Indian gymnastics.

The Governor noted that Ariha’s achievement as the first Indian to win gold in the senior women’s individual event at the Asian Championships had brought immense glory to the country.

Bhalla also acknowledged the contribution of Ariha’s coach, praising the guidance and dedication that played an important role in the gymnast’s success. He wished Ariha continued success and expressed confidence that she would win more international honours for India.

Ariha’s historic performance adds another significant achievement to Manipur’s rich sporting legacy and highlights the growing presence of Indian athletes on the international gymnastics stage.
