Diphu : In a major political shift for Assam’s hill region, a new regional party  the Autonomous People’s Movement (APM)  was formally launched today in Karbi Anglong district.

The announcement was made by the Convening Committee for Political Convention during a launch event held at the Sarsing Teron (Langkung Habe) Memorial Town Hall in Diphu.

According to organizers, APM’s core agenda focuses on demanding the implementation of an Autonomous State under Article 244(A) of the Indian Constitution.

Also safeguarding constitutional rights guaranteed under the Sixth Schedule, driving local economic self-reliance, and protecting indigenous lands, natural resources, and demographic security. The launch event drew a significant turnout of local leaders and workers from across the district, who hailed the party’s debut as a historic turning point for the region.

APM enters the arena with its sights set firmly on the upcoming Member of Autonomous Council (MAC) elections in 2027. Currently, the ruling party holds an absolute majority in the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), leaving the council without an active opposition.

The entry of APM is expected to challenge this single-party dominance and introduce a distinct opposition voice in local governance. Political observers note that while APM’s entry has generated substantial momentum among voters and political circles, its long-term impact on Karbi Anglong’s political landscape will depend on its ability to convert its agenda into electoral success in 2027.
