GUWAHATI | Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Union Minister Prahlad Joshi in New Delhi, holding discussions on the state’s flood recovery efforts and key development priorities.
During his meeting with Sitharaman, Sarma briefed the Union Finance Minister on the state government’s response to the recent floods and ongoing plans to rehabilitate affected people and restore damaged infrastructure.
“It is always a pleasure to meet Hon’ble Finance Minister Smt @nsitharaman Ji, who has consistently been a strong champion of Assam’s interests and aspirations,” Sarma said in a post on X. The Chief Minister said Sitharaman heard Assam’s concerns “with great attention and sensitivity” and assured him of the Centre’s support in helping flood-affected families rebuild their lives.
The meeting assumes significance as Assam continues to undertake relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction measures following severe flooding that affected several parts of the state. Sarma also held a meeting with Joshi, who handles the portfolios of Education, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and New and Renewable Energy at the Centre.
According to Sarma, the discussions with Joshi focused on Assam’s priorities in education, food and civil supplies, and renewable energy. Describing the meeting as “very productive”, the Chief Minister thanked Joshi for his support and positive approach towards Assam.
The meetings in New Delhi come at a time when the Assam government is focusing on flood recovery while simultaneously pursuing development initiatives across key sectors. The state is expected to seek continued central assistance for rehabilitation and reconstruction as it assesses the impact of the floods.
