Silchar | Tension gripped Cachar College in Silchar on Tuesday after a clash reportedly broke out between two groups of students affiliated with the ABVP and NSUI over the wearing of hijab on the college campus.

According to reports, the incident occurred when NSUI members were conducting a membership drive on the campus. Members of the ABVP allegedly arrived at the spot and objected to the programme. The disagreement reportedly escalated after objections were also raised over some NSUI members wearing hijab.

The argument soon turned into a physical altercation between the two groups, leaving several students injured. There were also allegations that some female students wearing hijab were assaulted during the clash. Police were rushed to the college following the incident and brought the situation under control. The injured students were taken to a hospital for treatment, according to sources.

Despite the police intervention, tension reportedly continued on the campus. The incident came a day after a group of Cachar College students submitted a memorandum to the Cachar Deputy Commissioner seeking restrictions on the wearing of religious attire, including hijab and tupi, by Muslim students on the college campus.

The latest clash has intensified the controversy surrounding religious attire at the institution and raised concerns over the possibility of further tension.
