New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has raised concerns over the quality of construction and other public projects, questioning whether the existing system of third-party quality audits is working effectively.

During a meeting with secretaries of the central government and chief secretaries of states, Modi is learnt to have asked whether there was now a need to introduce a “fourth-party audit” to ensure better quality in government works.

The Prime Minister reportedly noted that third-party audits are already a standard practice for checking the quality of public projects. However, reports of quality-related problems have raised questions about the effectiveness of the existing system.

The discussion focused on the need to strengthen monitoring and accountability in construction and infrastructure projects carried out with public funds.

The Centre is expected to examine ways to improve quality checks and ensure that government projects meet the required standards.
