Guwahati: Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has demanded that September 19 be officially declared as ‘Zubeen Divas’ in memory of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.

Gogoi has urged the Assam government to issue a gazetted notification recognising September 19 as ‘Zubeen Divas’. He also demanded that the day be declared a government holiday across the state.

The MLA further called for ‘Zubeen Divas’ to be mandatorily observed during government programmes and official events.

Gogoi said a formal government notification should be issued to ensure that the day is commemorated across Assam in honour of Zubeen Garg and his contribution to Assamese music, culture and society. The demand comes amid calls for wider recognition of the singer’s contribution to Assamese culture.
