IMPHAL | The Centre has agreed to upgrade the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, to the status of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), according to the state government.

The announcement followed a meeting between Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J P Nadda in New Delhi. During the meeting, the Chief Minister said discussions were held on measures to strengthen and improve the health sector in Manipur.

Singh said Nadda had agreed to the proposal for upgrading RIMS, Imphal, to AIIMS status. He expressed gratitude to the Union Health Minister for supporting efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure in the state. The Chief Minister also said Nadda had agreed to approve the proposal for setting up a new medical college in Senapati district.

The proposed medical college is expected to strengthen access to medical education and healthcare services in the hill district and surrounding areas. The proposed upgrade of RIMS would mark a significant development for Manipur’s premier medical institution, while the proposed medical college in Senapati could expand the state’s medical education infrastructure.
