Guwahati | The Assam government has launched a major initiative to introduce artificial intelligence in government school education, with nearly one lakh teachers scheduled to receive AI training by May 2027.

Samagra Shiksha, Assam, on Friday signed agreements with six organisations, including Google AI, IIT Madras-Bodhan AI and Canva Education, to promote technology-enabled teaching, personalised learning and AI-based assessment across the state’s school education system.

Education Minister Ranoj Pegu attended the signing ceremony held at the State Mission Office of Samagra Shiksha. The agreements were signed by the Mission Director of Samagra Shiksha and representatives of the partner organisations. Under the partnership with Google AI, teachers will be provided secure digital identities and access to AI-powered tools, including Notebook and Gemini, to support teaching, lesson planning and administrative work.

Training resources will be made available in Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Hindi and English. Google will work with the State Council of Educational Research and Training and District Institutes of Education and Training to implement the programme.

As part of the initiative, IIT Madras-Bodhan AI will train around one lakh teachers handling Classes 6 to 12 by May 31, 2027.

The training programme will initially begin with 40 master trainers, who will subsequently train other teachers through a cascade model. Teachers will be trained in using AI for lesson planning, content creation and assessment design. Their learning and performance will be evaluated through the DIKSHA portal.

They will also have access to Bodhan AI’s multilingual teacher-assistant bot, which can generate lesson plans, worksheets and revision materials. However, AI-generated content will be subject to review by teachers before being used in classrooms.

Another partner, LEHS-Wadhwani AI, will develop an AI-enabled oral reading fluency assessment system for students of Classes 3 to 8. EkStep’s Assisted Language and Math Learning platform will provide personalised support in reading and mathematics for students of the same classes by creating individual learning profiles.

Canva Education will initially partner with 70 schools to promote digital literacy, visual communication and design thinking. The programme will also support teachers in preparing lesson plans and classroom materials and promote responsible and age-appropriate use of AI.

The sixth partnership, with the Foundation to Educate Girls Globally, will focus on identifying and enrolling out-of-school adolescents aged 15 to 18, particularly girls, through the Assam State Open School and the National Institute of Open Schooling.

The initiative will also provide support for mock tests and vocational opportunities for participating students. The state government said the six partnerships are aimed at creating a more inclusive and technology-enabled school education system, while strengthening teachers’ skills and improving learning outcomes.
