Imphal | Manipur witnessed 523 days of bandhs, shutdowns and economic blockades since the outbreak of violence in May 2023, according to official records of the state Home Department. The data covers the period from May 3, 2023, to September 8, 2026, spanning 1,225 days. During this period, internet services were suspended for 385 days, while curfew was imposed for 261 days across the state or in parts of it.
The figures underline the prolonged disruption in Manipur since the outbreak of ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki communities. In 2023, the state recorded 107 days of bandhs, shutdowns or economic blockades. The figure increased to 113 days in 2024, comprising 63 days of bandhs or shutdowns and 50 days of economic blockades.
In 2025, Manipur recorded 78 such days, including 49 days of bandhs or shutdowns and 29 days of economic blockades. The highest annual figure so far was recorded in 2026, with 225 days of bandhs, shutdowns and economic blockades between January and September. This included 136 days of bandhs or shutdowns and 89 days of economic blockades.
Internet suspended for 385 days
According to the Home Department records, internet services were suspended across the state or in parts of it for 385 days between May 3, 2023, and April 4, 2026. The government cited concerns over the use of social media to circulate images, videos and messages that could inflame tensions and affect the law-and-order situation.
In 2023 alone, internet services remained suspended across the entire state for 218 days.
The latest suspension cited in the records covered Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, Jiribam and Pherzawl. Services were suspended for five days from April 7, 2026, with the order revoked on April 12.
261 days of curfew
Manipur also witnessed 261 days of curfew during the period covered by the records, with restrictions imposed across the state or in individual districts. The longest period cited was in Litan village in Ukhrul district, where curfew remained in force for 209 days from February 8 to September 4, 2026.
The official figures provide a measure of the scale and duration of restrictions and disruptions that have continued in Manipur since the violence began in May 2023.
