GUWAHATI | Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday said the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election was significant in the context of the ongoing debate over delimitation and the numbers required in Parliament to advance constitutional changes.
Addressing a gathering in Nagaon, Gogoi alleged that the BJP was seeking to increase its strength in the Lok Sabha to secure the numbers needed to push through a delimitation-related legislation.
“This election is about democracy. How the BJP is trying to change the numbers in the Lok Sabha so that they get a two-thirds majority and bring the delimitation bill. Every vote is important for them to pass the delimitation bill,” Gogoi said.
The Delimitation Bill, 2026 was introduced in the Lok Sabha on April 16, proposing the constitution of a Delimitation Commission to undertake the readjustment and reallocation of seats in the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies. The related delimitation Bills were discussed in Parliament in April. The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, however, failed to secure the required majority in the Lok Sabha, while the Delimitation Bill was rendered infructuous.
Gogoi also said the Congress planned to move a motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and urged the Nagaon MP to support it.
“In the coming days, we will be bringing a motion against the Chief Election Commissioner. We want the Nagaon MP to vote against the CEC. Therefore, for many reasons, this election is important,” he said.
The Congress has stepped up its criticism of the Election Commission and has demanded action against the Chief Election Commissioner. The Election Commission, meanwhile, said on September 26 that decisions taken at its full-commission meeting, including those related to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision, were approved unanimously.
The Nagaon Lok Sabha seat fell vacant after Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned. The by-election is scheduled for October 6, with counting of votes set for October 9.
Gogoi’s remarks place the Nagaon contest in the wider political debate over Parliament’s composition and the proposed delimitation exercise, alongside the immediate electoral contest for the vacant seat.
