Silchar | A 29-year-old man was arrested in Assam’s Cachar district for allegedly posting communally provocative content on social media targeting the Bajrang Dal, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Hindu religious beliefs, police said.

The accused, identified as Kalparnab Gupta, was arrested on September 28 following a complaint lodged by a Bajrang Dal activist at Silchar police station.

According to the complaint, Gupta had allegedly shared defamatory and hateful posts targeting the two organisations and Hindu religious beliefs.

The complainant alleged that some of the posts sought to link Bajrang Dal members with extortion activities and a recent gang-rape case in Cachar district.

Gupta was also accused of making allegedly insulting remarks about Lord Ram and other Hindu deities and mocking religious symbols and practices, including ‘sakha-sindoor’.

The complaint further alleged that Gupta had advocated beef consumption in a manner intended to hurt religious sentiments and promote communal disharmony.

Police said the accused has been booked under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections dealing with promoting enmity, public mischief and defamation. Relevant provisions of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act have also been invoked.

Police are examining digital evidence related to the posts and questioning the accused as part of the investigation, officials said.

Gupta identifies himself on Facebook as a research scholar at IIT-Bombay and chief convenor of the Barak Union for Civil Liberties.
