Silchar | Silchar is all set to hold its first-ever Municipal Corporation election on Saturday, with polling personnel dispatched to their respective stations along with election materials on Friday as the city prepares for a major civic poll.

Polling staff collected election materials from the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) and Inter-State Truck Terminus (ISTT), which have also been designated for the establishment of strong rooms for the election. The movement of polling teams and election materials continued through the day under tight security arrangements.

The election will be held across 40 wards, with a total of 303 polling stations set up across Silchar. Authorities have deployed 1,212 polling personnel to conduct the election, including staff for 10 all-women polling stations.

Officials said detailed security arrangements have been put in place to ensure peaceful polling and the smooth movement of voters and election personnel. Polling stations have been categorised as sensitive and highly sensitive based on the assessment of local conditions.

Additional security measures have been introduced at the highly sensitive polling stations, where armed police personnel have been deployed. Security teams will also monitor the movement of people and respond to any situation that could disrupt polling.

A Quick Response Team (QRT) has been placed on round-the-clock duty across the city. The team will respond to any untoward incident and assist authorities in addressing problems faced by voters or polling personnel during the election.

Cachar District Magistrate Rahul Kumar Gupta and Senior Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das briefed the media on the preparations and security arrangements ahead of polling. The administration has also focused on ensuring that election materials reach all polling stations on time and that polling personnel are adequately prepared for Saturday’s exercise.

The first municipal corporation election is being closely watched in Silchar as the city moves to a new civic governance structure. Voters across the 40 wards will cast their ballots on Saturday to elect representatives to the city’s first Municipal Corporation.

With polling teams now in position and security arrangements in place, Silchar is set for the first civic election since its transition to a municipal corporation.
