GUWAHATI | Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Assam in December 2026 or January 2027 to inaugurate the Tata semiconductor assembly and test facility at Jagiroad, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday. Sarma made the announcement while addressing an election campaign meeting at Deosal in Jagiroad.

“In the coming month of December or January 2027, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Jagiroad to inaugurate the project,” the chief minister said. The under-construction facility is being developed as a major semiconductor assembly and testing unit and is expected to have a production capacity of up to 48 million chips a day once fully operational, according to details released by the Union government and the company.

Describing the project as a major industrial development for Assam, Sarma said Jagiroad had gained international attention because of the semiconductor facility and its potential to drive industrial and economic growth. “Jagiroad’s semiconductor will be the world’s largest factory. Chips at this scale have never been manufactured before,” he said.

Sarma also highlighted infrastructure projects in Jagiroad, saying four bridges had been sanctioned in the area following a request from local MLA Pijush Hazarika. He claimed that the state government was taking decisions more quickly to push forward infrastructure and development projects.

Women-led markets planned in Jagiroad

During the campaign meeting, Sarma also announced plans to establish four to five women-led markets in Jagiroad with government support. Drawing a comparison with Manipur’s traditional Ima markets, he said the proposed markets would provide women with dedicated spaces to sell agricultural produce and other goods.

“Manipur has such women-led markets called Ima markets. Similarly, in Assam we wish to develop markets for women entrepreneurship,” Sarma said. The chief minister also appealed to voters during the campaign for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll to support BJP candidate Devasish Sharma.

He said the bypoll would not alter the state government but would provide the BJP with additional political strength to pursue its development agenda.Sarma also referred to the proposed semiconductor facility and infrastructure projects as examples of the government’s development push in the Jagiroad area.
