Shillong: Senior BJP legislator and former Meghalaya minister A.L. Hek has claimed that several sitting MLAs from Garo Hills, including those from different political parties, are interested in joining the BJP.
Hek said he had received calls from legislators who were willing to switch to the BJP but were unable to do so because they did not have the numbers required to avoid disqualification under the anti-defection law.

According to Hek, legislators from parties including the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) were among those who had expressed interest in joining the BJP. He said the BJP’s doors were open to those wishing to join the party.
The BJP leader’s remarks came amid heightened political activity in Meghalaya following the recent entry of eight United Democratic Party (UDP) MLAs into the BJP. The move increased the BJP’s strength in the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly from two to 10.
Hek also claimed that he had been receiving several calls from different parts of Meghalaya from people interested in joining the BJP in groups.
His remarks have added to speculation over possible further political realignments in the state ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections. However, there has been no confirmation from the MLAs named in the broader claims that they are preparing to leave their respective parties.
