New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has dismissed Professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam following an inquiry into multiple sexual harassment complaints filed by female students.

According to an official university order issued on Friday, the dismissal was based on the recommendations of the university’s Internal Committee (IC), which investigated the allegations.

“Upon following the due process and considering all available facts and as per the report of the Internal Committee (IC), the punishment of dismissal from the services of the University is hereby imposed on Prof. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam,” the order stated.

Akoijam was a faculty member at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems under JNU’s School of Social Sciences. He is also a Member of Parliament representing the Inner Manipur constituency.

The complaints, submitted earlier this year, alleged inappropriate conduct, including unwanted advances and inappropriate remarks. Following its inquiry, the Internal Committee recommended a major penalty under the university’s service rules, leading to the dismissal order.

Akoijam had previously denied the allegations, describing reports about the case as unverified and claiming that they were part of a targeted campaign to damage his reputation.
