Silchar : Silchar Sporting Club, one of the oldest and most respected sporting institutions in the Barak Valley, felicitated newly elected Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha on Saturday in a brief yet heartfelt ceremony at his residence in Natunpatty.
A delegation from the club, including President Dr. Anup Kumar Roy, Vice President Babul Hore, Treasurer Satyajit Das, and members Abhijit Dhar, Shankar Sarkar, and Kamalesh Das, presented the MP with a memento, a bouquet, and a traditional uttariya in recognition of his recent appointment. The programme was smoothly coordinated with the assistance of club members Jaydeep Kar and Animesh Chanda.
The event was held in accordance with a resolution passed during the club’s executive meeting on July 1. Speaking after the ceremony, Dr. Roy described the meeting with the MP as “warm and constructive,” adding that Purkayastha was delighted to learn about the legacy of Silchar Sporting Club, the second oldest sports organization in the region.
“He assured us of his wholehearted support for the club’s future initiatives,” said Dr. Roy, noting that the felicitation was arranged quickly as the MP was scheduled to travel outside Silchar.
Vice President Babul Hore shared that detailed discussions were held with the MP regarding the club’s plans to commemorate its 90th anniversary later this year. “He showed great interest in our upcoming events and promised to support us in every possible way,” Hore added.
Established nearly 90 years ago, Silchar Sporting Club has been a pillar in nurturing sports culture and youth development in the Barak Valley. With fresh encouragement from the MP, the club’s leadership hopes to further elevate its activities and outreach in the coming months.
