Silchar: In solemn remembrance of the martyrdom at Karbala, youth volunteers in Silchar organized sharbat distribution across the town on the occasion of Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic Hijri calendar.
As the spirit of mourning swept across the Muslim world and the Indian subcontinent, including the Barak Valley, several localities of Silchar witnessed an act of symbolic tribute. Volunteers distributed sharbat (sweetened beverage) to passersby of all communities at key points such as Katatal Point, Botertol, Fazal Shah Mazar Point, Bakr Shah Mazar Point, and Ramnagar.
The initiative commemorates the tragic events of Karbala, where Imam Hussain the grandson of Prophet Muhammad and his companions endured extreme thirst on the scorching plains, with the nearby Euphrates River blocked by enemy forces. Even children in the Imam’s camp suffered in agony due to lack of water.
The distribution of sharbat is a gesture rooted in empathy and remembrance, recalling the pain endured by the martyrs and spreading a message of humanity and unity. Volunteers ensured that people of all faiths were offered the drink, reinforcing communal harmony and compassion.
Apart from sharbat distribution, many Muslims in Silchar observed fasts in memory of Ashura. Several mosques and local neighborhoods also organized shirni (sweet offerings) and dua mahfils (prayer gatherings), adding to the spiritual and reflective nature of the day.
Muharram, especially the day of Ashura, holds profound significance for Muslims worldwide, symbolizing sacrifice, steadfastness, and the timeless struggle for justice.
