Silchar: In a major boost to law enforcement and emergency response capabilities, Cachar Police on Monday conducted a successful trial run of a newly inducted engine-powered advanced boat on the Barak River.

The vessel, provided by the Assam Police Headquarters, marks a significant addition to the district’s riverine surveillance and rapid response system. Alongside the induction of the boat, a dedicated river police outpost has also been established in Cachar district.

The trial run, which covered the route from Silchar’s Sadarghat to Lakhipur, was led by SSP Numal Mahatta, accompanied by top officials of Cachar Police. The journey was completed in just 1 hour and 10 minutes, showcasing the efficiency and speed of the newly deployed craft.

Speaking to media following the exercise, Mahatta stated, “This advanced engine-powered boat will greatly enhance our capability to monitor and respond to situations along the Barak River. Whether it’s tackling illegal activities, assisting during festivals, or managing accidents from river bridges, this boat will serve as a valuable tool.”

He added that the boat will be crucial in addressing antisocial activities and smuggling that often take place along river routes. It will also strengthen police presence during large public gatherings, such as Durga Puja idol immersions, when riverbanks become densely crowded, raising safety concerns.

Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and senior police officials participated in the joint exercise, underlining the multi-agency coordination that will be critical in utilizing the vessel during emergencies.

SSP Mahatta expressed optimism that the new river patrol infrastructure will not only serve Cachar district but also benefit the broader Barak Valley region. “This is a step toward a more responsive and prepared police force, ready to serve the people on land and water,” he said.
