Silchar: In a startling revelation that has shaken public trust, a man identified as Mihir Kanti Das has been arrested for posing as a qualified medical doctor for over 25 years in Barak Valley. Acting on information received from the Gauhati Medical Council, the local administration took swift action to apprehend the impostor, who had been illegally practising medicine across the three districts of the region.
Sources revealed that Das, who had only passed Higher Secondary in the third division, presented himself as a seasoned medicine specialist. Over the years, he earned the trust of unsuspecting patients, regularly charging consultation fees, issuing prescriptions, and operating like a licensed medical professional all without a single valid medical degree.
The deception came to light when the registration department of the Gauhati Medical Council attempted to verify his credentials and uncovered discrepancies pointing to a broader fake doctor network. Following this discovery, authorities moved quickly to arrest him with the cooperation of the district administration.
Local administrative officials have confirmed that several charges have been filed against Das, and a full-scale investigation is currently underway.
The incident has triggered public outrage, with residents expressing deep concern over the lack of medical oversight that allowed such a fraud to go undetected for decades. Many are now demanding the harshest possible punishment for the accused, whose actions may have endangered countless lives.
This case has once again highlighted the urgent need for stricter verification and monitoring mechanisms within the healthcare system, especially in semi-urban and rural regions like Barak Valley.
