Imphal : Manipur Technical University (MTU), in a significant initiative towards the development of technical capability in the domain of geospatial technology, on Monday inaugurated a Two-Week Faculty Development Programme (FDP) cum Workshop on GIS & Remote Sensing at its Imphal campus.
The program is being jointly sponsored by the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Civil Engineering, in association with Cotton University, Guwahati, with the sponsorship of NECTAR (North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach), Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
The FDP tries to arm teaching faculty members, researchers, engineers, and professionals with basic knowledge and practical skills in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and spatial data analysis technologies that are important in infrastructure development, environmental management, urban planning, disaster risk reduction, and smart governance.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by resources from academia, government, and the research community. Addressing the gathering, the Registrar of MTU stressed,

Being the first and the only technical university of Manipur, we are dedicated towards filling the knowledge gap in emerging technologies like GIS and Remote Sensing that are pivotal for North-East’s sustainable development and disaster resilience.”
Over 35 individuals, including faculty and students from different Universities, colleges and institutes, have signed up for the program, a sign of increased interest in geospatial knowledge within academia as well as field uses.
According to Dr Meinam Annebushan Singh, Course- Convenor and Dr Khagokpam Gopal Krishna Singh, Co-Convenor, the fortnight-long programme includes technical lectures by distinguished resource people from NECTAR, technical training, case-Studites and project learning.
It also aligns with MTU’s wider vision for fostering innovation, capacity building, and resilience in consonance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and India’s Digital India and Smart Cities missions.
This program further enforces the position of MTU as a hub of excellence and knowledge centre in North-East India, and develops new opportunities for regional partnership in geospatial science and technology.
