India Team B beats Team A

IMPHAL : The 7th Manipur Women’s International Polo Tournament 2026 got underway on January 28 at the historic Mapal Kangjeibung (Imphal Polo Ground), with four teams from three countries competing for the title.
Teams from South Africa and Zambia are participating alongside India Team A, representing the Indian Polo Association, and India Team B from Manipur.
In the opening match of the tournament, India Team B (Manipur) registered a convincing 11-3 victory over India Team A. The second match of the tournament will see South Africa take on Zambia on Thursday.
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla inaugurated the tournament at a ceremonial opening, during which he unfurled the flag of the All Manipur Polo Association (AMPA).
Addressing the gathering, the Governor said Manipur is the birthplace of Sagol Kangjei, regarded as the original and living form of modern polo, and described the sport as an inseparable part of the state’s cultural heritage and identity. He stressed that the promotion of polo must go hand in hand with the welfare of the indigenous Manipuri Pony, the protection of grazing grounds, and the conservation of historic polo fields.
Highlighting the importance of the Women’s International Polo Tournament, Bhalla said the event reflects a strong commitment to women’s empowerment through sports and sends a powerful message of confidence, leadership and excellence.
The opening ceremony was attended by Additional Chief Secretary Vivek Kumar Dewangan, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South) Maj Gen Ravroop Singh, and AMPA president Konsam Saratchandra Singh, among other dignitaries.
