Silchar: In a major crackdown on illicit liquor transportation, police on Monday night seized 86 cartons of foreign liquor from a truck at the Kalaincherra toll gate in Assam’s Cachar district.

According to sources, the truck (registration number AS 11 EC 8141) was intercepted during a routine checking operation at the Digorkhal toll gate, located along the Assam-Meghalaya border. Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a detailed search of the vehicle around 10 PM and discovered the liquor cartons concealed beneath other goods.

The truck, reportedly coming from Meghalaya, was allegedly attempting to smuggle the liquor out of the state via National Highway 6. Authorities suspect the consignment was destined for sale in other states. During the inspection, the driver managed to flee, taking advantage of the commotion. A manhunt has been launched to trace the absconding driver, police sources said.

This seizure marks a significant success in the ongoing efforts to curb illegal liquor trade across interstate routes. Further investigation is underway to trace the origin and intended destination of the consignment, and to identify the network involved in the smuggling attempt.
