AGP Cachar Celebrates Its 41st Foundation Day

Silchar: The Cachar District Committee of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) celebrated the party’s 41st Foundation Day on Tuesday, recalling its roots and reaffirming its commitment to the people of Assam.

The programme began at 8:45 a.m. at the party’s district office on Trunk Road, Silchar, where District President Kabir Ahmed Barbhuiya hoisted the AGP flag. The event was attended by senior leaders including Central Secretary Sujit Deb, Asom Yuva Parishad Secretary (Central Committee) Nacbub Hussain Laskar, Minority Parishad President Haidar Hussain Laskar, Krishak Parishad President Ahmed Shahid Barbhuiya, former president Naba Gopal Das, and others.

Floral tributes were offered to the martyrs of the Assam Movement, followed by a tribute to the late singer Zubeen Garg. His portrait was displayed and a minute of silence observed in his memory. The programme also featured the felicitation of former party leaders, social workers, and contributors from various fields.

Prof. Dipendu Das, Head of the Department of English at Assam University, spoke about AGP’s founding ideals, describing the party’s journey as “a chapter of pride in Assam’s history.” Sujit Deb highlighted AGP’s role in maintaining political balance and public trust through the decades.

In his address, Kabir Ahmed Barbhuiya urged party members to stay rooted in AGP’s ideals and strengthen their connection with the people. Haidar Hussain Laskar credited the party for liberating Assam from years of exploitation and contrasted its record with that of the Congress.

The celebration also recognised journalists and editors from Barak Valley for their contributions to public dialogue. Over a hundred new members joined AGP during the event, inspired by its principles.

The day concluded with a community lunch and the lighting of lamps in the evening. Under the coordination of Dipan Bhattacharjee, a team from the Silchar Legislative Council honoured several distinguished citizens and local journalists.

Among others present were Secretary Maniton Singha, former State Council member Niresh Kishore Singha, former Mahila Parishad president Ruma Rajkumari, social activists H. Chakraborty and Nazmul Hussain Mazumder, District Krishak Parishad President Ahmed Sayed Barbhuiya, Deep Bhattacharjee, Chittaranjan Singha, Moinuddin Laskar, Kajal Laskar, Bijoy Nandi, Pradip Sinha, Amalendu Debnath, Soumen Das, and Bishal Biswas.
