Silchar: Residents of Rongpur and nearby Rabidas Para held a small meeting on Saturday with regional leaders of the Asom Gana Parishad to discuss the compensation recently provided to families living on government khas land under the first and second phases of the Bharatmala road project.

During the meeting, locals honoured AGP Cachar district working president Maniton Singha, general secretary Mominul Haque Laskar, and central youth secretary Nacbub Hussain Laskar for their role in pushing the issue forward.

Recipients of the compensation thanked Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, AGP president Atul Bora, Barak Valley Development minister Kaushik Rai, MP Parimal Suklabaidya, MLA Mihir Kanti Shome, former Deputy Commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha, current Deputy Commissioner Mridul Yadav, and officials of the Silchar Settlement Office for facilitating the process.

Speaking at the programme, Singha noted that people residing on khas land along Bharatmala routes are usually excluded from compensation. Rongpur, he said, became an exception due to focused political effort and timely administrative intervention.

He urged the government to now complete the process by providing alternative land to the long-settled daily wage earners and families affected in Rongpur. Singha appealed to the Chief Minister and Minister Rai to take up the matter and called on the District Commissioner, through the media, to monitor it closely and ensure proper rehabilitation.
