SIT set to file chargesheet in Zubeen Garg case

KRC TIMES Assam Bureau

Guwahati: All India Congress Committee General Secretary and Assam Co-Incharge Manoj Chauhan on Friday levelled a series of corruption and mismanagement allegations against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during a press conference.

Chauhan claimed the Chief Minister owns undisclosed properties in Assam, other parts of the country and abroad. He also questioned the source of wealth attributed to Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, alleging that her assets and companies grew significantly only after Sarma assumed ministerial office and later became Chief Minister.

Chauhan criticised Sarma’s earlier public remarks about depending financially on his wife, calling it contradictory to the growth of her business interests.

Turning to the Zubeen Garg death case, Chauhan accused the Chief Minister and the Home Department of serious administrative lapses. He said Sarma took 75 days to acknowledge the artist’s death after initially dismissing it, which he described as a failure of governance and communication.

Chauhan also questioned the state government’s silence on the demand for Scheduled Tribe status for six communities and the unrest at Tezpur University.

He accused Sarma of using the ST issue for political gain ahead of elections, and urged the public to remain alert against any attempt to mislead voters or restrict electoral rights.

Meanwhile, the Assam Police Special Investigation Team is preparing to file the chargesheet in the Zubeen Garg case. A senior SIT official said the document is nearly complete and is expected to be submitted by the December 18 deadline. The Chief Minister had earlier stated the chargesheet would be filed between December 6 and 12 to prevent the accused from seeking bail due to procedural delays.

Seven people have been arrested so far, including event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and the singer’s manager Siddharth Sharma.
