The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has appointed Ajit Lal as its Northeast Advisor, entrusting him with key responsibilities in handling ongoing peace processes in the region.
Lal, a retired Indian Police Service officer, previously served as Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee and was Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau from 2008 to 2011. With long experience in security and intelligence matters, he is expected to play a crucial role in advancing dialogue efforts in the Northeast.
According to sources, Lal will lead the Naga peace talks and continue discussions with Kuki Zo and Meitei insurgent groups in Manipur. His appointment comes at a sensitive time, as efforts are underway to restore stability and find lasting political solutions in the region.
Lal had earlier led the Naga political talks between March and July 2014. He was also present during the signing of the tripartite agreement for the creation of the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority. The agreement was signed by the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation, the Nagaland government, and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Officials believe his prior involvement in negotiations and deep understanding of the region will help move the peace process forward.
